Henry Cavill has been injured during pre-production of the new Highlander film, forcing the start of filming to be postponed, EW has learned.

The former Man of Steel and Witcher star was training for what promises to be another stunt-filled title, which will likely pick back up for production in early 2026. Deadline was the first to report the news.

Cavill’s film is a new version of the 1986 action-fantasy about an immortal Scottish swordsman’s battle against another immortal warrior that starred Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. The epic tale, which took place across past and present-day storylines, was told through several movies and a TV series that aired for six seasons in the ’90s.

Cavill was cast to play the main character in the upcoming version to be directed by Chad Stahelski, who’s behind the John Wick movies, and costarring Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Marisa Abela, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, and Max Zhang.

EW has reached out to reps for the actor and the movie.

Cavill’s previous work also includes returns to his Superman role in DC movies Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 and Justice League in 2017; the film Mission: Impossible – Fallout; and the Netflix series Enola Holmes and Showtime’s The Tudors.

Back in May 2019, Stahelski told Entertainment Weekly that he was “still working on the development” of a Highlander project, but he already had high hopes.

Highlander is such a massive property,” the director said. “Luckily, the studio (Lionsgate) is really behind me in this. I truly believe this is one of those properties that could actually sustain a good universe, meaning a TV show or something. And to go out there, and just haphazardly throw together what we think would be a quick sword fighting-immortal movie, I think would be a mistake. And honestly, the people behind this, the studio behind this, they’re dying for this to go. If anything, I’m the one holding it back, and trying to creatively lay out everything.”

Stahelski added, “We’re trying to really lay out this universe and not f— it up to the point where you cannot continue this story. We love it so much, we’re trying to treat it with a lot of care.”

To that end, the production company has secured the rights to the 1986 film to potentially develop a new TV series as well.
