Verizon customers across the U.S. were hit with a major disruption on January 14, 2026, when a widespread network outage left many without service for hours. According to DownDetector, nearly 200,000 users reported problems as phones suddenly switched to “SOS” mode, preventing calls, texts, and mobile data access. Frustrated customers took to social media to share their experiences, with outages reported in multiple states, particularly along the East Coast.

Verizon later confirmed the issue in a public statement, saying teams were working to restore service and investigate the cause of the disruption. So, what caused the massive Verizon outage — and how is the company responding?

What Caused the Verizon Network Outage?

It’s still unclear what caused the sudden Verizon outage. According to the company’s X account, a spokesperson for the company issued a statement, noting that they were “aware” of the service interruption.

“We are aware of an issue impacting wireless voice and data services for some customers,” the statement read. “Our engineers are engaged and are working to identify and solve the issue quickly. We understand how important reliable connectivity is and apologize for the inconvenience.”

What Does SOS Mean?

When a Verizon customer sees the “SOS” signal on their phone, it usually means there is an issue connecting to a wireless network. However, each device should still be able to make 911 calls if the user connects to another carrier.

Is Verizon Working Again?

Yes — Verizon has confirmed that the widespread wireless outage has been resolved, and service has been restored for the majority of customers. While some users continued to report intermittent issues shortly after service was restored, reports of outages dropped significantly as the day went on.

“The outage has been resolved. If customers are still having an issue, we encourage them to restart their devices to reconnect to the network,” a company spokesperson said in a statement.

The company is still investigating the cause of the disruption, which primarily affected customers on the East Coast but was reported nationwide.

Verizon Outage Map

DownDetector has an updated outage map for all Verizon customers who have reported network issues, and the following were the cities with the most reports: New York City, Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Miami and Ashburn.
